The Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge kicked off this month for children and youth in grades K-12 to encourage reading and writing thoughout the summer months. Participants are required to read 7 books from the Mayor's suggested reading list and write a summary for each book read.
Students who complete the Challenge have a chance at winning some really great prizes including bikes, Ipods and more! Everyone who reads is a winner!
While the number of students enrolled has steadily increased to an upward of almost 4,000 participants, the number of book summary completions has been on the decline. Nearly 64% of the participants did not complete written book summaries last year! Well, that's all about to change!
RTSB, in conjunction with a number of community partners and volunteers, will offer a series of writing workshops to keep children's literacy skills sharp over the summer. Students who participate in the workshops will learn:proper techniques to set their stories,
how to identify main characters and main ideas, as well as give their personal opinions about books.
The workshops are designed to enhance the overall writing skills of the student and increase the number of completed Reading Challenge submissions. Only those who complete the challenge are invited to an award ceremony with the Mayor.
