A world record could now be in the works. It's called Read for the Record, a campaign aimed at encouraging literacy. Community leaders have now joined schools, child care centers, and community organizations in an attempt to break the world record for the number of children reading the same book on the same day. Last year's event shattered the existing world record of 688,000 when more than 2.5 million people participated.

"It's an opportunity to explore, expand your brain, get new information, and learn you have options," said Read to Succeed Community Outreach Coordinator Deborah Porter. "It opens your mind."

Last year in Western New York more than 14,000 participated and local organizers hope to smash the regional record.

"We hope to break the record," added Porter. "Our numbers won't be in for a couple of weeks, but we think we're really close to that record."

Around the globe, children from all over read 'The Snowy Day' by Ezra Jack Keats. For more information visit: http://www.readtosucceedbuffalo.org/ or http://www.readfortherecord.org
